Los llamados silvestristas, 40.000 federados, de los cuales 6.000 en la Federación Catalana de Caza (Federcat), no apoyan la normativa porque ven “inviable” su supervivencia.
“Nadie ha logrado que críen en cautividad”, dice el responsable de la Federcat, Josep Vilalta. El silvestrista reclama “la captura controlada de pocas cantidades”. El jefe del Servicio de Fauna y Flora de la Generalitat, Ricard Casanovas, afirma que “solo un 10% de los federados se dedica a la cría” y que “no volverá el silvestrismo por que la cría en cautividad requiere formación, recursos y dedicación, pero es viable”.
En Cataluña, según el Cuerpo de Agentes Rurales (CAR), al año se capturaban legalmente hasta 100.000, lo que causaba un grave daño a la biodiversidad. Cinco años después de la prohibición, la lucha contra la caza furtiva y el mercado negro de estos pájaros sigue moviendo grandes cantidades de dinero.

En agosto cayó en Sabadell una organización criminal de comercio de estas aves que las vendía en mercados clandestinos de Cornellà, Terrassa, Badalona y Hospitalet.
Los Agentes Rurales han decomisado varios sistemas para atrapar a estas aves: redes abatibles, ligas —especie de varillas en cruz empapadas en cola que se ponen en las ramas de árboles y las aves quedan pegadas— o redes japonesas, una malla invisible que se pone en vertical entre dos palos para cazarlos al vuelo.
Al tratar de liberarse de las trampas se enredan y acaban con lesiones en alas y plumas. La caza de fringílidos con métodos no selectivos ha acabado con miles de otras pequeñas aves, algunas protegidas. En 2019, ante la falta de regulación aplicable a los fringílidos que subsisten en cautiverio y a los nacidos en cautividad una vez prohibida su captura, el Govern empezó a redactar un nuevo decreto, aun pendiente de aprobación.
En él, se regulará la tenencia y cría para actividades tradicionales de canto, se detallará cuáles son y se regulará las transacciones para potenciar la cría para tener una población cautiva “que permita la actividad”. Asimismo, fijará un sistema para identificar a las nacidas en cautividad y controlar mejor el furtivismo.
